Is a question we ask ourselves many times, especially when we think that our efforts are not properly acknowledged or awarded. Is it worthy to live a life of honesty, integrity and purity based on the abolute moral laws as defined by God in the Bible? Is the effort worthy? Because we have to accept it, in our world of moral relativism it is a challenge.
In the 73 chapter of the book of Psalms we find the same question: "Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocense. For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morining." (vs. 12-14). One might wonder why is it that people who live their lives without any respect for God's law "prosper" and we as Christians doing our best to live by every word of God are "plagued and chastened every morning"? And sometimes that can make us doubt about the value of being honest and upright in the middle of a society which is loosing very fast the compass which points us to the true values.
The problem is that we are spending too much time looking in the direction we shouldn't. Let's turn our eyes to people who did not compromise in their obedience to God in spite of living in godless societies. One that comes to mind is Joseph. Joseph was an upright young man. He was sold by his brothers, because of his faithfulness to Potiphar and mainly to God, he run away from sexual inmorality. The result, he was sent to jail, but the story does not end there...at the end he was second in all Egypt, only Pharaoh was above him (Genesis 37, 39, 41). We could see many other examples of integrity and success. Daniel's friends, Daniel himself.
The answer of all these people to the question if it is worthy to live in obedience to God's principles and values, I am pretty sure is an emphatic YES.
The same answer is given in Psalms 73:25-28 "Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strenght of my heart, and my portion for ever. For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.
Just thinking out loud...
